How to Choose Crossbars for Your Vehicle

A set of crossbars can turn an unused roof into space for swags, bikes, work gear, a kayak or a roof pod. But a bar that looks right on a mate’s ute may not fit your SUV, suit your load, or meet your vehicle’s roof rating. Knowing how to choose crossbars starts with the vehicle you own and the gear you genuinely plan to carry.

For Perth drivers, that can mean very different jobs. A family SUV may need a quiet, removable setup for holiday luggage. A tradie’s van may need strong bars for ladders every weekday. A touring 4WD may need a foundation for a full roof rack, awning and recovery-board mounts. Choose for the regular job first, then allow sensible room for the occasional bigger trip.

How to choose crossbars for your roof type

Crossbars are the horizontal bars that span the width of your roof. They need a vehicle-specific mounting system to attach safely. That mounting system depends entirely on the roof design, so the make, model, model year and roof configuration all matter.

Many SUVs and wagons have raised roof rails, with a visible gap between the rail and roof. These commonly accept clamp-on crossbars, but the rail shape, width and position still determine the correct feet and bar length. Flush rails sit directly against the roof and need a model-specific fitting kit. They can look neat and keep wind noise down, though fitting options are more specific.

Other vehicles have fixed mounting points under small covers, factory tracks, or a bare roof that needs door-jamb clamps. Utes, vans and older 4WDs may have gutters or purpose-built rack tracks. Each approach has its place. A door-jamb setup can be an excellent solution for a daily driver, while tracks offer flexible bar positioning for regular work or touring loads.

Never buy bars based on a similar-looking vehicle. A facelift, roof-rail change or different body style can affect fitment. Check the exact vehicle details before ordering, including whether it has a sunroof, panoramic roof, roof rails or existing tracks. A proper fit should sit securely, clear doors and tailgates, and follow the manufacturer’s mounting positions.

Crossbars or a full roof rack?

Crossbars are often the smarter choice when you carry items occasionally. They suit roof boxes, bike carriers, kayak holders, ski carriers and lighter work equipment, then can be removed when not needed. They are generally more affordable and less bulky than a platform rack.

A full roof rack or platform makes more sense when you need a broad, flat carrying area or regularly mount accessories such as an awning, rooftop tent, jerry-can holder or recovery-board mounts. The trade-off is added cost, weight and wind resistance. If a pair of crossbars does the job, there is little value in fitting more rack than you will use.

Start with the load rating, not the accessory

The most common crossbar mistake is looking only at the bar’s advertised capacity. Your actual safe limit is always the lowest-rated part of the system: the vehicle roof, the mounting kit, the crossbars, and any accessory attached to them.

Your vehicle handbook lists the maximum roof load, usually as a dynamic load rating. Dynamic means the load allowed while driving. It includes everything above the roof: bars, feet, roof rack or box, mounting hardware and the cargo itself. If the roof limit is 75 kg and your crossbar system weighs 6 kg, the remaining capacity for accessories and gear is 69 kg, provided every other component is rated accordingly.

This catches out plenty of touring setups. A rooftop tent may be within the bar manufacturer’s rating but exceed the vehicle’s dynamic roof limit once the bars and tent are combined. Static capacity, or what a system may hold while parked, is a separate figure and should never be treated as permission to overload the roof on the road.

Weight distribution matters as much as the total. Keep heavier items low where possible, spread loads evenly across both bars, and position cargo within the rack or accessory manufacturer’s instructions. A heavy item high on the roof can change handling, increase body roll and make crosswinds more noticeable, particularly on a loaded 4WD, van or tall SUV.

Match the bar profile to how you drive

Crossbars usually come in square, round or aero profiles. Square bars are straightforward, durable and often a value-focused option for work use. Their shape can create more wind noise and drag at highway speeds, especially when driven empty.

Aero bars have a wing-shaped profile designed to reduce wind noise and fuel-use impact. They are a good fit for daily drivers and long-distance touring vehicles where quiet cruising matters. They usually have an accessory channel along the top, making it easier to fit compatible mounts neatly.

Round bars remain useful for certain accessories and traditional rack systems, but not every carrier is compatible with every bar shape. Before choosing a profile, check how your bike carrier, kayak cradle, roof pod or ladder clamps attach. Some use wraparound U-bolts, while others require a T-track channel or a specific adaptor.

Aluminium bars are light and corrosion-resistant, a practical advantage in coastal WA conditions. Steel bars can offer excellent durability and value for demanding work applications, though they may add weight. Neither is automatically better. The right choice comes down to capacity, compatibility, budget and how often the vehicle is driven with the bars fitted.

Think about bar spacing and load length

Two bars are not simply two bars placed anywhere on the roof. Their spacing affects stability. Long items such as canoes, ladders and timber need enough spread between the bars to prevent movement. Shorter accessories, including many roof pods and bike carriers, have defined minimum and maximum bar-spread requirements.

Fixed mounting points can limit how far apart the bars sit, which is normal. Track-mounted systems provide more adjustment and can be particularly useful for vans, utes and vehicles carrying different gear through the year. If you plan to carry a long kayak or trades ladder, discuss the item’s length and mounting points before settling on a setup.

Also consider clearance. A roof box needs room for its lid to open, and rear-mounted equipment should not interfere with the tailgate. On a ute with a canopy, the bar height may need to align with a roof rack or ladder rack over the cab. Small fitment details make a big difference once the gear is loaded.

Do not overlook security, noise and everyday use

Crossbars can be a long-term investment, so the practical details deserve attention. Lockable feet and locking accessory mounts make it harder for someone to remove your equipment when the vehicle is parked at a trailhead, worksite or shopping centre. Locks are a deterrent, not a replacement for common sense, but they are well worth considering for regularly fitted gear.

Wind noise varies by bar style, roof shape and mounting position. Aero bars are usually quieter, but even they can whistle if an accessory channel is left open or a bar is fitted incorrectly. Correct installation, end caps and rubber strips all help. If you only use the bars a few weekends each year, removing them between trips can reduce noise and save fuel.

For work vehicles, convenience may matter more than a sleek look. Easy-to-access tie-down points, durable protective strips and accessories designed for ladders or conduit can save time every day. For family vehicles, a lower-profile bar that works cleanly with a roof pod or bike carrier may be the better outcome.

Fit it properly before loading up

A crossbar system is only as safe as its installation. Mounting points must be clean, feet positioned correctly and fasteners tightened to the specified torque. After the first drive with a load, check the system again. Recheck it before long trips, after rough tracks, and whenever you remove and refit accessories.

Secure cargo with rated straps and appropriate carriers rather than relying on a few rope knots. Nothing should be loose enough to shift, rub on the roof, block your view, or become a hazard in an emergency stop. Be mindful of changed vehicle height when entering car parks, garages and drive-throughs, especially with a roof box, kayak or loaded rack fitted.
